Madison Companies Partner to Deliver Innovative Location-Based Solution
Leveraging Mega-Trends Like Mobility, Big Data And Cloud Computing, Berntsen & SOLOMO Set Example For Local Partnerships
Madison, Wisconsin – As any long-standing company knows, success comes in the wake of purposeful transition. Change is inevitable but thriving companies drive transitions in anticipation of change, as opposed to waiting for change to drive them. Madison-based Berntsen International is a long-standing manufacturer and a leader in its industry. It is an example of a company that thrives through innovation.
“At Berntsen, we established our business by delivering quality products for surveyors and grew by expanding our products to support broader infrastructure marking needs” said Rhonda Rushing, owner and President at Berntsen. “We recognize that the world is continually evolving. That is why we are investing in new technologies to meet the rapidly changing world of infrastructure marking.”
Those new technologies include ‘smart’ products that communicate information as well as mark a location. Berntsen’s recently introduced InfraMarker™ System integrates RFID (radio frequency identification) enabled marking products, mobile software, and cloud data storage to dramatically improve the speed, reliability, and quality of locating underground utilities and boundary lines.
To build that system, Berntsen partnered with Madison-based SOLOMO Technology, a location-based mobile company. “We were looking for a strategic partner that could help us with long-term product development strategies as well as deliver quality software applications on time and budget,” explained Mike Klonsinski, Director of Business Development for Berntsen, “SOLOMO’s broad experience in implementing location technology met those requirements for us.”
The Solomo-Berntsen partnership delivered an InfraMarker System that is practical today and supports future industry advancements. Key features include:
Mobility: As Berntsen customers are always on the move, providing a mobile solution was imperative. SOLOMO developed a mobile application (Android) that is both functional and intuitive. Additionally, the application integrates Google Maps with an overlay of dynamic “pins” that signify an infrastructure location.
Internet of Things: Each “pin” is an RFID tag that is attached to a physical location (gas valve, water lateral, property corner, etc.). By connecting these physical items and locations to the internet, it provides clearer communication, triggers maintenance alerts and links users to data that was never before accessible in the field.
Big Data: With new categories of data that are easily integrated to a customer’s GIS system, asset owners are able to glean deeper understanding of infrastructure lifecycles, improve implementation processes, predict upgrades and share information faster across geographic boundaries.
Cloud Computing: All of this is possible with the power of the Microsoft Azure cloud. Having this solution live in the cloud delivers flexible access to users and scalability to grow without straining a customer’s computing resources.
Berntsen’s approach is a refreshing reminder that a traditional manufacturer can be as entrepreneurial as a garage start-up. It just takes a recognition of opportunity, willingness to take a risk, and the right resources to launch the product.
